Hands-on support at Chitambo Hospital

12 February 2026 / By Gareth

Last week, in partnership with Friends of Chitambo, the Mission Geeks team travelled to Chitambo Hospital in rural Central Province — a truly special place with over 100 years of history. Founded in 1908 by Scottish missionaries in memory of Dr. David Livingstone, who died nearby, the hospital continues to serve as a vital healthcare hub for the community and surrounding rural clinics, supporting a catchment of about 100,000 people.

We were warmly welcomed by Dr. Chabala and his dedicated team, and had a fascinating morning walking through the wards, labs, and facilities — listening, learning, and assessing the needs of this historic institution that remains essential to health in the district.

Once our assessment was complete, the Mission Geeks team got straight down to some practical work:

  • We were able to return a non-functioning resuscitaire to working order, giving vital support for the care of newborns and infants.
  • We made good progress troubleshooting the hospital’s solar hot-water heater.
  • And we began evaluating a recently donated ultrasound machine, with repairs underway.

The work continues now back at our base — conducting research, contacting manufacturers and donors, sourcing parts, and preparing for a return visit to carry out more in-depth repairs and support on site.

Places like Chitambo face many challenges but we are excited to join hands with the local team and partners to help meet these challenges practically and creatively.
We’re grateful to God for the opportunity to serve in a place rooted in history and hope, and inspired by the passion and dedication of the Chitambo team!
