Nayamba School

/ ABOUT THE ORGANISATION
Nayamba School is a community primary school for children in rural Chisamba, Zambia where children who previously could not go to school due to distance and expense are now getting a first rate education.

Nayamba Primary School was established on Nagwaza Farm to educate the children of the families working on all the surrounding farms because there was no primary school close enough. This wonderful free school has attracted many children from the surrounding area the school now has over 350 children attending daily.

The school initially consisted of 3 classrooms and one small office and was having to offer half day timetables in order to provide education for grades 1-7. It now boasts 9 classrooms teaching children in grades 1-9, a pre-school, kitchen, staff room and a library space. Accommodation for all teaching staff is now complete and a brand new trades training centre is almost finished! Nayamba is making a hugely positive impact in this rural community.

/ ABOUT OUR PROJECT

Water is absolutely everything in a school like Nayamba. It is used for washing clothes and cleaning hands, flushing toilets and watering gardens, cooking food and quenching thirst. Life  without it (or with a limited supply) becomes very difficult, very quickly. Over recent years, the school has struggled to gain access to clean water and suffered the frustrating and expensive set-back of drilling several bore-holes that produced very little water or none at all.

Nayamba gave Mission Geeks a shout to see if we could help and we jumped on board! We quickly visited the school and recorded the coordinates of the existing boreholes and our friends at GeoQuest Ltd. very kindly agreed to analyse the results for us free of charge. Armed with this information we approached RidgePoint Geoconsult who agreed to go out to Nayamba and perform a scientific hydrological survey to site several possible borehole sites.

On the 12th of October a borehole was drilled at one of these sites and at 70 metres deep, lovely clean water was found!

Now that we can access the water, we are fundraising to purchase a solar pump, tanks and piping to complete the project!

/ FUNDING REQUIRED

Copperbelt Energy Corporation has sponsored $4,400 to fund the installation of the solar pump, tanks and piping required to ensure the school has a constant supply of clean water all year round.

Please consider supporting a Mission Geeks project! Individuals or organisations who contribute to this project will receive regular updates on project progress, as well as professional photography and video documenting the impact the project has on the community.
