/ ABOUT THE ORGANISATION
Nsobe Community School is a school with a difference in remote rural Zambia, offering a life changing education and hope to the community’s vulnerable children. Nsobe believes in Christ-Centered quality education with employment opportunity, preparing pupils not only for jobs, but for life.

Nsobe started in a home garden with 16 preschool children in 2009 and has grown a grade a year and now cares for and educates 450 students taught by 24 dedicated and caring teachers in our fully completed primary and secondary campus. Nsobe is passionate about developing and caring for the whole child, and this is achieved through running a daily feeding scheme, offering sports, guidance, child protection, early year’s development, life skills training, and vocational classes. Nsobe students are the bringers of literacy and hope to their homes and greater community.

Secondary schools in the area are few and far between and inaccessible to remote rural children. While a solid primary foundation is critical, without secondary schooling no student can access trades or academic pathways and future employment. Nsobe will also offer vocational skills training in carpentry and tailoring from January 2022 (so that those not on the academic path can create their own wealth) as well as continuing to further develop agricultural and skills training. The school also has a Safe House for 12 vulnerable girls who live on campus so that they can finish school in a protected and nurturing environment free from abuse and neglect.

Nsobe Community School is recognised as a model school with excellent results by the Ministry of Education.

/ ABOUT OUR PROJECT

A major challenge that Nsobe Community School needs solved is that they cannot currently access any internet providers from their rural location. Access to the internet is critical to both staff (for access to teaching resources and communication) and students (for study and enhanced learning).

When Nsobe approached Mission Geeks we decided to take on the challenge of finding a way to get them connected to the outside world. While VSAT is an option, it is very expensive so we decided instead to explore boosting cell signal to the site. Once funded, volunteer geeks will travel to Nsobe and perform a technical survey to assess cell signal in the area. This data will then be sent to a company in South Africa that will customise a Cell Signal Booster unit specifically to suite the conditions at Nsobe Community School and re-broadcast the cell signal across the campus. Volunteer geeks will then return to Nsobe to install the booster, a simple GSM router and WiFi access points around the campus.

We are very excited to get to work on this project as we know that connecting Nsobe Community School to the internet has the power to open up so many new opportunities for learning for both staff and pupils.
